Shelters of Last Resort

In the event you need to evacuate your home, you need a place to go. You need to work out a plan before the need arises. The best plan is to make arrangements with family or friends to stay with them. You will be more comfortable and with people you know. If a community shelter is open, it should be your last resort.   Our community mass care shelters are not equipped to deal with special medical needs. Individuals with special medical needs or their caregivers should click here for additional information.

Our county has 2 locations designated as community shelters which may be opened for a hurricane event.  The structural integrity of these shelters cannot be guaranteed.

Monroe County High School is designated a community evacuation shelter and is operated cooperatively by the Department of Human Resources, Monroe Co. Health Department, Monroe County EMA, Monroe County Board of Education, and the American Red Cross.  It is located on Tiger Drive in Monroeville.  It will be opened on an "as-needed" basis at the discretion of Monroe Co. EMA.  Residents should monitor local radio stations and this website for information on the status of this shelter.  It will not be opened for every event.

The Anne Farish Community Shelter is designated a community evacuation shelter and is operated by the City of Monroeville.  Located on Vanity Fair Drive in Monroeville, it will be opened on an "as-needed" basis at the discretion of the Mayor of Monroeville.  Residents should monitor local radio stations and this website for information on the status of this shelter.  It will not be opened for every event.

These shelters are NOT SUITABLE FOR A TORNADO SHELTER!  Residents should not go to these locations seeking shelter unless they have been advertised as being open for a particular event.

If you do go to a shelter, you will be required to register and follow the rules.  A list of things that you will need to bring can be found here.
